Primary election filing begins Thursday

WORLAND – Filing for state and local offices begins Thursday and runs through June 1, for a variety of offices on the primary ballot, scheduled for voting on Aug. 21.

WORLAND – Filing for state and local offices begins Thursday and runs through June 1, for a variety of offices on the primary ballot, scheduled for voting on Aug. 21.

Applicants for state offices must register through the Office of the Secretary of State, while county positions will register with the county clerk. City and municipal positions will register with the city or town clerk.

A $25 filing fee applies to all offices, and those filing for office must be a Wyoming resident and registered voter. Due to state law, those seeking partisan offices must register as either Republican or Democrat to be eligible for the primary. The general election will be Nov. 6.

Partisan offices to be nominated at the primary election include:

One U.S. Senator (six-year term), currently held by John Barrasso.

One U.S. Representative (two-year term), currently held by Elizabeth Cheney. Cheney has announced she will seek a second term.

One Governor (four-year term), currently held by Matt Mead, ineligible for reelection due to term limits. Several Republican candidates, a Democratic candidate and Constitution Party candidate have announced intentions to seek the office.

One Secretary of State (four-year term), currently held by Edward Buchanan. Buchanan was appointed to the position earlier this year and has announced he will seek election to the position.

One State Auditor (four-year term), currently held by Cynthia Cloud.

One State Treasurer (four-year term), currently being held by Mark Gordon, who has expressed a bid for governor.

One State Superintendent of Public Instruction (four-year term), currently held by Jillian Balow.

One State Representative, House District 27 (two-year term), currently held by Mike Greear.

Outside Washakie County there are also one state representative for House District 28, currently held by Nathan Winters. Winters has announced he will not seek re-election, but is instead seeking the Republican nomination for state auditor.

House District 26 state representative seat held by Jamie Flitner is also open this year.

Two Washakie County Commissioners (four-year terms), currently held by Terry Wolf and Fred Frandson.

One Washakie County Assessor (four-year term), currently held Kathy Treanor.

One Washakie County Attorney (four-year term), currently held by John Worrall, who has announced his intention to run for re-election.

One Washakie County Clerk (four-year term), currently held by Mary Grace Strauch.

One Washakie County Clerk of District Court (four-year term), currently held by Suzanne Whitlock.

One Washakie County County Coroner (four-year term), currently held by Jeff Lapp.

One Washakie County Sheriff (four-year term), currently held by Steven Rakness.

One Washakie County Treasurer (four-year term), currently held by Doris Kern.

Partisan offices to be elected on August 21 include nine pairs of Republican Precinct committee members, and eight pairs of Democratic Precinct committee members.

Non-partisan offices (they do not need to declare a party) to be nominated at the August 21 primary for the City of Worland include:

One Council Member, Ward 1 (two-year term), currently held by Gary Gerber.

One Council Member, Ward 1 (four-year term), currently held by Lisa Fernandez.

One Council Member, Ward 2 (four-year term), currently held by Christy Schneider.

Two Council Members, Ward 3 (four-year terms), currently held by Michele Rideout and Loresa Brinkerhoff.

Filing dates for school board trustees, fire protection, cemetery and conservation districts are August 8-28.

Offices to be elected in the general election of November 6 include:

Washakie County School District No. 1:

Four (4) Trustees At Large (four-year terms), currently held by Donald K. Bryant, Terri Ann Logan, Anna Venable and Duane Whitlock.

Washakie County School District No. 2:

Two Trustees At Large (four-year terms), currently held by Tessia Greet and Jane Thurston.

The last day to register to vote will be Aug. 6, although voters may register at the polls on Aug. 21 with proper identification.
