Trespassing in Ten Sleep leads to multiple charges

TEN SLEEP – A Basin man is facing multiple charges, including evading law enforcement, after a trespassing call in Ten Sleep resulted in an arrest on Monday.

At approximately 8 p.m. on Sunday, Washakie County Sheriff deputies responded to a trespassing call at the parsonage building behind the Mountain View Church. While no suspect was found, deputies did find and take control of a backpack containing drug paraphernalia and other items, according to a court affidavit.

On Monday morning, at approximately 9:30 a.m., Sheriff Steve Rakness returned to the scene, and while exiting his vehicle, encountered Terry D. Carey, 39, of Basin, exiting the back of the building.

Dressed in jeans, a T-shirt, and wearing a large hunting knife on his belt, Carey immediately started running when spotted by Rakness.

Crossing Highway 16 and headed for a wooded area along Ten Sleep Creek, Carey jumped the highway guardrail and ran into the trees as Rakness, in pursuit on foot, repeatedly yelled for the subject to stop.

“I’m not stopping for you,” replied Carey and disappeared into a grove of Willow trees, according to the affadavit.

While waiting for backup, Rakness found no further evidence of the subject in the dense trees.

Once deputies and a lieutenant arrived, officers began searching the area on foot, with an officer scanning the creek bed from higher ground with binoculars. Once the subject was spotted, officers converged on the area, and found Carey hiding on the creek bank.

Sheriff Rakness ordered Carey to drop his hunting knife and put his hands over his head, to which the man replied, “F**k you, Rakness.”

Carey was subsequently handcuffed and arrested by deputies, while Rakness covered the suspect with his service pistol.

Carey was arrested for interference with a peace officer and criminal trespass. It was later determined that Carey also had an arrest and hold order for Wyoming Probation and Parole. As indicated in police records, Carey was also found to be in possession of methamphetamine.

On Thursday, Carey appeared before in Fifth Judicial District Circuit Court in Worland on one count of trespassing and one count of interference with a peace officer, resisting arrest.

Carey is currently being held on $2,500 bond, and has a scheduled hearing date of June 14.
