WORLAND - Field 4 at Newell Sargent Park is hardly used during the baseball and softball seasons, but that could change soon if Worland Recreation Board baseball commissioner Ken Shearer's plan is given the thumbs up by the community.
Shearer is proposing taking field 4, which is seldom used by the adult recreation league softball leagues, and converting it into three separate fields for the tee-ball and coach pitch baseball leagues to use.
"We're looking at making three 100-foot fields for tee-ball and coach pitch, they'd have a 45-foot base path.
"We're looking at getting the community's thought process on it. They can stop by the community center or go to the community center's website to share their thoughts on the changes. Once we get a majority, we'd like to get a start on it that way it is ready for next spring. The rec board is on board with it and the city thinks it's doable," said Shearer
Bleachers will be set right in the middle of all three fields, allowing spectators to view all three fields from one convenient spot.
Having three fields exclusively for tee-ball and coach pitch leagues would open up fields 3 and 5 for more games and practice for the older baseball leagues, traveling teams and softball leagues. It also adds more games to the tee-ball and coach pitch seasons.
"That way if grandma and grandpa wanted to watch a grandchild play, and they're on two different fields they can sit in the same spot and watch two different games.
"Even though we're taking away a field we're actually opening up the other fields for more activities," said Shearer. "We don't have a cost right now, we're just looking to hear from the community. Talking to coaches and other parents they're all for it. It will increase game times for both coach pitch and tee-ball. Instead, of having three games a week for tee-ball, it would increase them to five games a week. Coach pitch it would give them a game five days a week rather than two days a week."
Another project in the works is building a new restroom, currently one is located between field 3, 4 and 5, closer to the parking lot to make them more accessible.
