Serving the Big Horn Basin for over 100 years
WORLAND – The Terek Fire is now 85 percent contained.
Minimal fire activity occurred Wednesday and full perimeter containment is expected today. The fire has been mapped at 42,267 acres. The acreage is from GPS information gathered by ground crews and helicopter operations used to more accurately map and define the fire area.
Crews will continue to secure the perimeter and increase containment. Resources will start to demobilize today. However, some ground resources will remain on the scene to focus on mop-up operations and patrol. Some smoke may remain visible throughout the area in the upcoming days from the interior of the fire.
Weather forecasts for the next few days are calling for high temperatures with very light to light winds with afternoon thunderstorms.
The fire is located northeast of Worland in Washakie and Big Horn counties, north of U.S. Highway 16 and south of WYO 31 mostly. It was originally three smaller lightning-caused fires which burned together.
BLM, private and state land have been affected, with more 33,000 acres of sage and grass burned on BLM land. The smallest portion of the fire has been on private land.
The Terek Fire was reported on Sunday night to the Cody Dispatch Center at 11:02 p.m., but Washakie County fire crews were originally dispatched about 10:30 p.m.
