Celebrate the harvest at Harvest Fest

WORLAND – The third annual Harvest Fest celebration, sponsored by Worland business group FridayFest Merchants, is Saturday in Worland with a variety of events happened throughout the city.

According to event coordinators Deb Larkins and Sara Bain, all along Big Horn Avenue starting at NAPA, Harvest Fest goers will find a variety of vendors with a diverse assortment of items for sale, from food goodies to handmade benches along both sides of the street with the farmers market nestled in the center. The farmers market theme will be harvest fest related and Rattlesnake Ridge will be providing the entertainment. Local businesses will also be offering sidewalk sales.

Games for the kids will be offered on the courthouse lawn, Bain added.

Wyoming Sugar is offering a community barbecue in the factory parking lot from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. The community barbecue is free to the community and will be serving hamburgers and hot dogs. "This is to thank our growers, our employees, old growers, old employees and the whole community," Wyoming Sugar Chief Financial Officer Joan Hall said. She added that Wyoming Sugar is hoping to make the community barbecue an annual event.

Wyoming Sugar President and CEO Mike Greear stated in an earlier interview, that the whole community is invited because the community has been a part of the factory. "I would bet that a good proportion of the people of this town at one time did something at the factory."

Wyoming Sugar also sponsored a harvest related coloring/decorating contest for the area elementary school children. Winners of the kindergarten and first-grade coloring page contest, the second- and third-grade poster contest and the fourth-grade paper scarecrow contest will be on display during the barbecue. The fifth-graders participated in a sugar beet decorating contest and all decorated sugar beets will also be on display.

Kings Carpet One is holding their second annual Cornhole Opener at Kiwanis Park with registration at 12:30 p.m. and starting at 1 p.m. According to their Facebook page, "Prizes include: custom cornhole set ($300 value), soft-side Yeti cooler, $100 gift card, and custom ATOM longboard."

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit Building for America's Bravest. "At Kings Carpet One we are very passionate about giving back to our community and to causes that touch our hearts. This weekend as part of Harvest Fest activities, we will once again be raising money for a foundation that means a lot to us," Kathy Mercado of Kings Carpet One said. "Building for America's Bravest is a program of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation that builds Smart Homes for our most catastrophically inured service members returning home.  Each home is custom designed to address the unique needs of each individual.  Energy efficient, automated and easily accessible-these homes use 'adaptive technology' to help our most severely injured heroes live better, more independent lives.  But as amazing as adaptive home technology is, it's far beyond the reach of most veterans and their modest pensions.  The waiting list is long - and for every home we build, another three veterans join the list.  When the call came, these brave service members went.  They made extraordinary sacrifices in our place.  We raise money to help give them a home they can come home to and the donations will make a real difference in a service hero's life," she added.

When asked what the main goal of Harvest Fest was, Larkings said to celebrate the upcoming harvest and for people to have fun.
