WORLAND — Weather may delay a street sealing project for the city of Worland.
During Tuesday’s Worland city council meeting, Mike Donnell, city engineer representative, reported that the the city has had to make changes to the 2018 GSB Friction Street Sealing Project.
The original project was slated to use GSB-88, an environmentally, water-based product used to extend the life of asphalt. GSB-88 works well in warm weather. Donnell said for GSB-88 the temperatures have to be in the 50s and rising. However, temperatures have dropped this week.
Donnell said they are now looking at using GSB-78. It is a thicker project that is not water-based so it can be placed when temperatures range in the 40s and higher. However, the weather next week has temperatures hovering in the mid to low 40s for highs.
The National Weather Service has forecast a chance of snow Monday morning then rain and snow with a high near 43 and a low of 26. Tuesday has a high forecasted of 46 with a low of 28, Wednesday is a high of 44 and low of 26.
The original bid for the project was awarded by the council at the Sept. 18 meeting. The bid for $144,227.93 went to ASTECH (Asphalt Surface Technologies) out of St. Cloud, Minnesota. Public Works Director Brian Burky noted the change order for the project, using the new material is an additional cost of $72,000.
Donnell said the project has been budgeted for in this year’s city budget using current one-cent sales tax funds.
The specific areas total more than 100,000 square yards. The areas targeted for the sealing project are Sage Creek Addition, Richins Addition from Yellowstone Avenue into the RJ Addition, north, east and west of the Worland Community Center Complex, and South 17th Street between Washakie and Howell Avenue.
During Tuesday’s council meeting Donnell said the company is required to notify residents through signage in the area as well as advertising in the newspaper. Residents will need to have vehicles removed from the streets when the project begins.
