Serving the Big Horn Basin for over 100 years
TEN SLEEP- Things are liable to get hairy in Ten Sleep this Saturday, when a local business will host the town’s first ever Muttonchop Festival and Contest, celebrating the unique sideburns worn by men made popular in the 19th century.
Taking place at the Big Horn Mountain Stage Company at 5 p.m., the contest was the brainchild of owner Marcus Huff.
“Things tend to slow down in Ten Sleep between Nowoodstock and Hunter Fest, so I thought it would be fun to have a get-together in the fall,” said Huff. “Plus, it would be pretty funny to see a bunch of guys walking around town with crazy sideburns.”
Special guests for the event include former House of Representatives candidate Rod Miller of Cheyenne as Master of Ceremonies, and Ten Sleep Mayor Jack Haggerty as a celebrity judge.
“And if you don’t have sideburns, don’t worry,” said Huff. “We will have stick-ons for sale for the bare faced and kids.”
The contest, featuring categories including “longest” “gnarliest” and “Overall Chop Master” will be followed by live music from Colorado and Wyoming blues musicians Doctor Mongo and Harr Harpoon.
“It’s an absurd idea and a good excuse to come out and have some laughs. Hopefully next year we can reach a goal of 200 pairs of sideburns in Ten Sleep,” said Huff.
