WORLAND — From agricultural mechanics to vet science and on to livestock judging the Chief Washakie FFA attended the University of Wyoming Cowboy Classic on Wednesday.

Sidnee Martinez and Wyatt Wyman participated in the ag mechanics contest that consisted of overhead lap ARC welding to small engine specifications and wiring to skid steer part identification. Dani Warner, Liz Voss, Meg DeBolt, Caylin Deniz, Jon Nicholas, Ashley Schrage, Abel Vega and Odalys Osorio-Alcala made up two teams for livestock judging that consisted of nine classes of placing and four sets of reasons. The more seasoned team of Warner, Voss, DeBolt and Deniz placed third overall out of 20 full teams as well as third in reasons, third in beef, fourth in sheep and fifth in placings. Warner was 10th high individual in sheep, seventh high in swine and eighth high individual overall. Voss placed fourth in beef and 11th overall out of 135 participants. Warner and Voss also tied for sixth in reasons. The junior team of Schrage, Nicholas, Vega and Ocorio-Alcala placed eighth in reasons.

Chief Washakie FFA Advisor Grace Godfrey said, “The Cowboy Classic offers one of the few ag mechanics and vet science contests available to students before the state contests in March and April so we were excited to have the opportunity to get a bit of a preview of the contest as well as see what we know and what areas we can improve on between now and then. We are very excited to be able to haul two full teams of livestock judgers as well and to gain some very valuable experience and get some of those first contest jitters out of the way.”

Both livestock teams will be judging at the NILE in Billings, Montana, this week and are looking forward to competing with a lot of new teams that they have not seen yet.
