No you did not win a car or $5 million

WORLAND - Washakie County Sheriff Steve Rakness is warning area residents of another telephone scam telling people that they have won a car or money and to receive your prize all you have to do is send the scammers “insurance” money.

“This is a scam, you will not get any money, you will not get a car,” Rakness said. “Do not give out any money to someone you do not know,” he added.

Rakness stated that the scammers are targeting the elderly in the hopes that they can intimidate them into giving the scammers money, credit card numbers and or bank account information along with personal information such as Social Security numbers and birthdates.

“Do not give anyone, your money, credit card number, bank account number or personal information. These criminals will use that money and information to harm other people and continue their criminal enterprise. Elderly folks and their care givers should pay special attention to these types of calls, as these criminals are targeting older people and intimidating them into not telling anyone what’s going on and coercing them into sending money in hopes of millions in dollars and a new car and when money is sent, the criminals keep asking for more,” Rakness said.

The scammers are probably not from the United States as most of the time they operate from overseas and the chances of recovering any losses or tracking the scammers down is very small, Rakness said. He added that these types of calls are scams and you could not only lose your money and bank accounts but your life and your family’s life could be ruined as well.

“People calling, saying you won $5 million and a new car is a fraud. Do not give out your credit card number, your banking account number or any personal information. These criminals will use it against you and ruin your life,” Rakness said.

“If you need help or need to report suspicious activity or calls, please contact the Washakie County Sheriff’s Office 307-347-2242, the Worland Police Department 307-347-4253 or your local law enforcement agency,” he said.
