Serving the Big Horn Basin for over 100 years

Plenty of ways to celebrate Halloween

WORLAND – There are plenty of events around the Big Horn Basin this month to get you and your family into the spooky mood for the Halloween season.

Events kick off this week with Worland's RT Communications Great Pumpkin Hunt, Oct. 22-26. RT Communications will be hiding the "Great Pumpkin," a pumpkin decorated with their logo, at a location somewhere on public land in Worland. Listeners of KWOR's weekday morning show from 6-9 a.m., or those who visit RT's Facebook page will be able to receive hints about the pumpkin's location. Whoever finds the pumpkin can bring it to RT Communications in Worland to claim the grand prize package.

Also from now until Halloween, throughout Worland, another event includes the Scarecrow Contest. Businesses from around town are invited to build a scarecrow and call the Business Events Community. Once they've taken a picture of it, the business will be in line for the competition. Voting will happen during the trunk or treat. First place business is to receive a plaque.

Washakie Museum is getting into the spooky atmosphere with their community production of "Blithe Spirit," Oct. 25-27.

The next event is the harvest party 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 26. The harvest party is an annual event held at the Herb Asp Community Center in Greybull. There is no admission fee, but dinner concessions ran by Girl Scout group 1212 will be provided. Money raised at the stands will help fund the Girl Scouts.

As part of the party, games will also be held. This will include carnival-style games, face painting, a cake walk and candy and toy prizes.

Greybull's FFA will also be celebrating the season with a hay bale maze on Oct. 27. This will run from noon to 8 p.m. There will be an admission fee, but there is a discount for those who bring a non-perishable food item. The maze is at the Buff Ranch at 2835 lane 33 1/2.

On Oct. 27, Saam Veterinary Clinic in Basin will be holding its annual Pet Costume Contest at 1:15 p.m.

The fun continues next week with the Worland Midway Auto Sales' fourth annual pumpkin carving competition at 6 p.m. at Worland Midway Auto Sales.

The event includes a chili dinner and prizes.

Pre-carved pumpkins can be brought to the competition and judged. This is open for both kids and adults, with different age groups. Judges will pick the best pumpkin; there will also be a prize for people's choice. Competitors must be present to win.

Other events take place on Halloween, Wednesday, Oct. 31. They include:

•Ten Sleep Annual Halloween Celebration begins with trunk or treat at the town park beginning at 3:30 p.m. Har rides also begin at 3:30 p.m.

•Mountain View Assembly of God church will be holding their second annual Noah's Ark Costume Contest at 6 p.m. This contest is open people of every age, from infant to adults. The different age groups include infant to 2 years old, 3 years old to kindergarten, first grade to third grade, fourth grade to sixth grade, seventh through 12th grade and adults. Rules for the costume contest require those who wish to compete to come dressed up as a Bible character, animal, fruit, vegetable, plant, galaxy item or anything created within the Genesis. Prizes will be awarded to every first and second place winner. Those with questions can contact Gloria at the church at (281) 923-7909.

•Halloween in Worland includes a trunk or treat on N. 9th St. which will feature local merchants and residents opening up their trunks for children to come trick or treat at. Those interested in being a part of the trunk or treat should contact the Worland chamber of commerce at (307) 347-3226. The event runs from 5 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 31

•The Business Events Community of Worland and Washakie County will also be holding a Main Street trick or treat. The event starts at 5 and will go until 7 p.m. on Oct. 31.

•Thermopolis Volunteer Fire Department trunk of treat on 14th Street. There will also be a pumpkin carving contest.

•Greybull's annual Trick or Treat Main Street from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Alongside main street activities, the Greybull library will have different activities going on as well.

In company with these Halloween events, Basin will also be providing a public trunk-or-treat at the football field. After last year's successful attempt, Children's Resource Center's family service coordinator Amanda Otto decided to do another event this year. As long as they're in costume, children can receive toys and prizes all while voting for their favorite trunk and can donate prizes.

For those interested in setting up a trunk, this year's theme will be Board Game Trunk or Treat. Those wanting to participate in setting up a Board Game themed trunk can contact Amanda at Children's Resource Center at (307) 568-2914.
