Halloween safety tips from Worland Police

WORLAND – Chief Gabe Elliott with the Worland Police Department shared Halloween safety tips on Monday, in advance of the holiday on Wednesday, when trick or treaters are expected on the streets of Worland and Ten Sleep.

For home owners, Chief Elliott recommends making sure the path to your door is clear, and welcome trick-or-treaters with your porch lights on. Do not give homemade or unwrapped treats to children. Pay attention to what’s happening in your neighborhood and report any suspicious or criminal activity to the Worland Police Department at 347-4253, or the Washakie County Sheriff’s Office at 347-2242.

Motorists should exercise extreme caution when driving, and remember to be on alert for excited children whose vision may be obscured by their masks.

Trick or treaters should make sure costumes are flame retardant so children aren’t in danger when they’re near burning jack-o-lanterns, and wear costumes that don’t cause trips, falls, or other bumps in the night. Make sure masks fit well and allow your child to see clearly without obstructed vision.

If a costume is dark in color, make sure to attach reflective tape or wear glow sticks, so your child can be seen by motorists and others. Parents should have a flashlight handy as well.

Chief Elliott also advises to trick-or-treat with an adult or in larger groups if at an age that doesn’t require adult supervision, never go into a stranger’s home or vehicle. Have a route or a good plan so everyone in the group knows where they are going, and don’t take shortcuts through yards or alleys.

Always walk on sidewalks rather than in the streets. Cross the streets only after checking twice, and either crossing at a street corner or a crosswalk. Watch for cars turning or backing up, and teach your children to never dart out into a street. Check all treats before eating.

“I know it’s hard for them to resist,” said Chief Elliott, “but please don’t let your children eat any treats without checking them first. And always put your phone down when walking.”
