Six WHS students part of all state marching band

WORLAND — One hundred fifty-four musicians and color guard members from the 2018 Wyoming All State Marching Band (WASMB) that will be heading to Philadelphia next week to participate in the country’s oldest Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Among those 154 are six students from Worland High School — Kaci Bentley on clarinet, Cameron Cabarett on TC baritone, Wyatt Douglas on trumpet, Caleb Fraser on clarinet, Joshua Kelton on trombone and Tatum Zimmerman in the color guard.

According to WASMB band director Dan Holroyd, the group will head to New York on Monday and then to Philadelphia on Wednesday.

According to the parade website, “The 1.4-mile 6ABC Dunkin’ Donuts Thanksgiving Day Parade is the oldest Thanksgiving parade in the country and a true Philadelphia tradition. The city streets make way for massive floats and giant balloons, plus local performers from choirs, dance groups, marching bands and more. And Santa himself arrives in grand fashion, ushering Philadelphia into the holiday season.

“Nearly 100 years old, the annual Thanksgiving Day parade promises another visual and celebratory feast and is the perfect early holiday treat to partake in with family or friends.”

In addition to marching and performing in the parade, Holroyd said the group will get to attend a Broadway Show in New York City and visit the 9/11 Museum and Memorial. In Philadelphia they will visit Independence Hall, “among many other fun activities.”

Holroyd said the group was formed earlier this year and started practicing and performing this summer with a camp in Powell. They marched and performed at events in Cody, Sheridan, Rock Springs and Cheyenne this summer.

WASMB HISTORY

According to the Wyoming All State Marching Band website, “the Wyoming High School All State Marching Band was first formed during the summer of 1990 to help celebrate the Wyoming State Centennial. That summer, they performed around the state of Wyoming for cheering crowds. On January 1, 1991, they performed in their first ‘Tournament of Roses Parade’; the band numbered 180 musicians.

“With the success of the first band, people around the state began talking about re-assembling the band to perform again. During the summer of 1994, the band was put back together with another whole new group of students. In November of 1994, the band performed in the ‘Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.’ This band numbered 185 students.”

The band has performed in Ireland, 1998; Washington, D.C. for the President’s Inaugural Parade in 2001; New York City in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Hawaii and additional performances in the Tournament of Roses Parade.
