Cowboys rally falls short in loss to Boston College

Pokes face Richmond today

LARAMIE – The University of Wyoming men's basketball team made a furious second-half rally, but it wasn't enough as it fell to Boston College 88-76 at the Fort Myers Tip-Off at the Suncoast Credit Union Arena on Monday night in Fort Myers, Florida.

UW fell to 1-4 on the season and wraps up play in Fort Myers at 3 p.m. today against Richmond (2-2), which lost 82-66 to Loyola-Chicago on Monday. Boston College (3-1) plays Loyola-Chicago (4-1) at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

UW trailed 48-32 at halftime, and 54-32 with 17 minutes, 12 seconds remaining. A three-point play by true freshman T.J. Taylor pulled the Cowboys to within 68-65 with 5:40 left. Two free throws by senior guard Justin James cut Boston College's lead to 71-67 with 3:56 to play.

Boston College junior guard Ky Bowman scored a game-high 38 points. His layup with 2:10 remaining gave the Eagles a nine-point lead. Boston College iced the game with a 3-pointer by freshman guard Chris Herren Jr. with 1:37 left.

The Eagles made their last four shots to end the game.

Bowman missed his first three shots to start the game, but finished 14 of 22 from the field, 7 of 12 from 3-point range and made all three of his free throws. The 6-foot-1 Bowman also pulled down seven rebounds.

James led UW with 27 points, and moved into 15th place on the school's career scoring list with 1,466 points. Junior guard Jake Hendricks had a career-high 22 points, was 5 of 8 from behind the arc and 7 of 7 from the free-throw line.

Taylor made his first-career start because sophomore guard Hunter Maldonado's back spasms acted up once the team got to Florida and didn't play. Maldonado is questionable for UW's game on Wednesday. Taylor finished with 11 points and six rebounds.

Boston College made 14 more baskets and attempted 23 more shots than UW, but the Cowboys outscored the Eagles 31-14 at the free-throw line.

Boston College scored 17 points off eight UW turnovers in the first half. The Cowboys had only five turnovers in the second half.

About Richmond

The Spiders lost to Loyola-Chicago 82-66 Monday night in Fort Myers.

Sophomore guard Jacob Gilyard, junior guard Nick Sherod and 6-10 sophomore Grant Golden all average more than 16 points per game. The only other Division I school that has three non-seniors averaging at least 16 points per game is top-ranked Duke.

Gilyard is 5-9, but is only one of two players in Division I averaging 20 points and five assists per game. The other is Jeff Dowtin of Rhode Island.

Richmond runs a Princeton-style offense that is more methodical and utilizes back-door cuts to the basket and open perimeter shooters.
