Senior Center provides incentives for weight loss

WORLAND – The holidays are over and the new year has begun, causing many people to make new year’s resolutions. Worland Senior Citizens Center is offering a weight-loss challenge starting today through April 10 to help all, not just seniors, who are interested in getting healthier with monetary incentives to lose weight and refrain from gaining extra weight.

The initial weigh-in is today and requires a $10 start-up fee, although Worland Senior Citizens Center activities coordinator Tammy Kunz stated that as long as you get signed up by the end of the week you are good. The weekly weigh-in is also going to be flexible as long as you get weighed-in once every week. “We’ve had a few people weigh-in yesterday and today [Monday and Tuesday], as long as you weigh-in by Friday you won’t have to pay [fine],” Kunz said. “Normally we [weigh-in] on a Wednesday, but if circumstances happen that you can’t do it on a Wednesday, as long as you weigh in that week, otherwise if you don’t it will be a missed week,” she added.

Participants who miss a weekly weigh-in will be monetarily penalized:

•Week 1 the fine is $1.

•Week 2 the fine is $5.

•Week 3 the fine is $8.

•Week 4 the fine is $11.

•Week 5 the fine is $14.

•Week 6 the fine is $17.

•Week 7 the fine is $20.

•Week 8 the fine is $23.

Those who gain weight will also be penalized $1 for every pound gained.

All money collected, with the exception of a quarter for expenses, will go to the top three losers, but losers will not qualify for their winnings if they have not paid their initial $10 and any fines earned at the time of final weigh-in.

After the final weigh-in the person who has lost the most weight will receive 50 percent of the money collected, second place 30 percent and third place 20 percent.

“We did it last year and the first place person got like $182, I think,” Kunz said.
