School board moves closer to paid maternity leave

Preliminary budget approved

WORLAND – The Worland school board met on Monday, April 27 to discuss and approve a second reading that would grant guaranteed separate maternity leave, and approve a first reading of a policy regarding retention.

Third and final reading of the maternity leave policy will be at the next regular meeting on May 25. Once approved it will make Washakie County School District No. 1 the second district in Wyoming to guarantee paid maternity leave to all staff.

The school board also approved a preliminary budget for the 2020-21 school year after they discussed impacts for an initial budget during a workshop before the March meeting. The budget will not be officially set until July.

OTHER BUSINESS

Kings Carpet was awarded the project to re-carpet East Side Elementary with a bid of $97,851. No summer school is planned to take place at East Side due to the renovations.

Y & S Technologies had a bid approved for 55 computers for a price of $36,850.

The board approved most of the winter sports coaches, with Aaron Abel being approved as boys’ basketball coach with David Villa and Wade Wyman returning as assistants. Josh Garcia will return as head coach for wrestling, with Ryan Utterback and Matthew Mueller returning as assistants. Boys swimming maintains a vacancy for its head coach with Justin Howe returning as an assistant. Indoor track returns both head coaches of Shawn Ivie and Crystal Redding. Amy Richards returns as head coach for cheerleading and Jes Baker will be an assistant.

Patrick Sweeney was hired as the varsity head football coach and Crystal Redding was hired as the first softball coach in program history, bios on those two can be read on B1 in this week’s issue.

Non-teaching contracts were approved for Randy Durr, Andee Bilodeau, Rebecca Luhm and Danielle Warren. Contracts were also approved for the Education Resource Center (ERC). Those contracts were Anne Bleicher, L’netter Gilmore, Kari Keller, Sally Hamer, Tim Warren, Kelly Schauble, Catherine Mortimer, Stine Turgeon, Kim Accurso and Dina Tassione.

Christina Cochran also had her contract renewed, with this being her continuing contract year.

Misty Hernandez resigned as the learning support teacher at West Side in order to accept a job closer to her home in Greybull.
