Serving the Big Horn Basin for over 100 years
WORLAND – Worland second-grade teacher Jannel Scheuerman was named the Washakie County School District No. 1 Teacher Of The Year.
Scheuerman is currently in her eighth year of teaching overall, all of which have been at the second-grade level. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education in 2012, and earned a master's degree in curriculum and instruction, with a specialty in reading, in December 2017.
"It meant a whole bunch," Scheuerman said regarding the award. "I am not a person who likes to be in the spotlight whatsoever, I would rather just step back and do what I need to do, but it meant a whole bunch."
In a letter of recommendation from South Side Principal Kenneth Dietz, he said that Scheuerman "embodies the characteristics that make a great teacher, collaborator and human being."
"Jannel is both understanding and compassionate," Dietz said. "Her compassion is seen in the faces of the students she works with."
According to Curriculum Director Jodi Rakness, Scheuerman is known as one of the teachers at the school who settles the water during meetings, and helps make sure that everyone is focused and understanding during tense situations.
According to Scheuerman, her favorite time of year is back-to-school night, which is typically the first time that teachers at South Side see their students after summer break.
Throughout the year of teaching, Scheuerman felt that she and the second-grade team made the most of every opportunity to help their students grow and learn everything that they could.
"I work with an incredible team," Scheuerman said. "Working with us five together allows us to be able to work with all the kids not just my class but everybody."
When the schools shut down in the middle of March, Scheuerman felt she and her team did the best they could to help transition the students to an online curriculum, as well as providing source material for students to work on while at home.
"It did not end the way we wanted it to, but I feel like we made the most of the very unusual situation we were in the last nine weeks," Scheuerman said.
Scheuerman feels as if being able to collaborate and communicate with her other teachers has helped make her a better teacher over the years, and make a greater impact on her students. Scheuerman is very hopeful that she is able to see her students and fellow staff members this upcoming fall and start off with a fresh new year.
"I am just thankful to work in the district that I am working in and work with the people that I do," Scheuerman said.
