Shirley I. Hensman, 90 passed away peacefully on June 15, 2020 at the Worland Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on October 15, 1929 in Lincoln, Nebraska, the daughter of Fred and Sula (Rinker) Meyer and sister of Sharlet (Burkey).
Shirley grew up on a farm in Red Cloud, Nebraska and graduated from Red Cloud High School, class of 1946 as the class President. After graduation, she attended Nebraska Wesleyan University and graduated in 1950 with an education degree in music and English. While attending the university, she was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and played the saxophone in the college band.
Shirley married her college sweetheart, Robert Kent Hensman on December 23, 1950. Her first teaching job started in 1951 in Utica, Nebraska. A year later, the couple moved to Worland, Wyoming where Bob taught music at the Middle School and Shirley worked for the school district as a secretary until she started teaching music in the elementary schools. She then switched to first grade at Eastside Elementary. Their first son, Kent, was born February 16, 1956 and their second, Mark, was born February 27, 1958. Shirley retired in June 1988 after 36 years with the Washakie County School District #1. After retirement, Shirley and Bob traveled to many states and countries then settled in Leisure World in Mesa, Arizona until they returned to Worland in 2005. They celebrated 69 wonderful years together.
Shirley was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir along with her husband. She loved to watch her sons play sports. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, playing bridge, golfing, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Keden Sportsman.
Surviving in addition to her husband, Robert, are their sons Kent and his wife Linda of Worland, Mark and his wife Diane of Powell; three grandchildren, Brandie Hensman, Jeff Kordonowy, and Heather Hensman; three great-grandchildren, Gwyneth, Jeff, Jr., and Reece; one sister, Sharlet Burkey of Lincoln, Nebraska; nephews, Greg and Kiley, and niece, Sandra.
A service of remembrance will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at the First United Methodist Church in Worland, 1301 Big Horn Ave. Those who wish to remember Shirley in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the American Parkinson Disease Foundation, 135 Parkinson Ave. Staten Island, NY 10305.
