Ten Sleep youth top skier in Sweet Sixteen Snowfest

WORLAND - Nearly 60 people attended the Tensleep Nowood Trailbreakers (TNT) Chili Feed to start the Sweet Sixteen Snowfest on Friday. On Saturday 28 people took to the slopes as part of the Snowfest, according to TNT president CJ Grimes.

Grimes said they went through most of the chili they had prepared and Shannon Moodry of Gillette was the winner of the cross-country ski package that was raffled off as a fundraiser for TNT and their trail projects.

"Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves," Grimes said.

On Saturday, TNT sponsored the Vertical Challenge at Meadowlark Ski Lodge with two challenges for youth and adults - the hike vertical challenge and the lift vertical challenge.

VERTICAL CHALLENGE

The Vertical Challenge is a competition to see who makes the most runs that day by using apps like Ski Tracks or other apps that log distance and elevation.

Matthew Scarlett of Sheridan went more than 6,000 feet on the hike vertical challenge, hiking up and skiing down the slopes.

No youth participated in this challenge, Grimes said.

The riding lift vertical challenge, with skiers riding the lift up and skiing down, had participants in both age categories, adults 18 and older and youth, 17 and under.

For the adults, Casey Freise of Buffalo won the division with 27,163 feet combined for the day.

Ten Sleep's own Kiyoshi Smith won the youth division and had the overall top distance with 35,354 feet.

Grimes said there were skiers from Ten Sleep, Buffalo, Thermopolis, Sheridan, Gillette, Hyattville and Idaho.

He said TNT will be meeting next week to review how things went this year, decide for certain whether to make the Snowfest an annual event and determine how much the club raised for future projects.

"So far, from the comments I have heard, everybody is happy about the way things turned out. It was fun and we want to do it again," Grimes said. He noted the club will also be looking at whether the last weekend of January is the right fit for the Snowfest.

He said the Classic Ski Clinic at the Pole Creek Trail offered by the Powder Pass Nordic Club had a strong showing.
