Search begins Tuesday for next county assessor

WORLAND – Following the resignation of Washakie County Assessor Kathy Treanor, effective July 6, the Washakie County Republican Party is set to host a special assembly meeting to interview candidates.

According to state statute, 22-18-111 (ii) “if a vacancy occurs in a county elective office, the board of county commissioners of the county in which the vacancy occurs shall immediately notify in writing the chairman of the county central committee of the political party which the last incumbent represented at the time of his election.”

Treanor submitted her letter of resignation for acceptance during the June 15 Washakie County Commissioners meeting. She was most recently elected in 2018 with her term ending Dec. 31, 2022.

Washakie County Republican Chairman Rick Martin said people can submit resumes and cover letters to [email protected] or mail to P. O. Box 633, Worland, WY 82401-0663. Resumes will be accepted until Monday, June 28, at 6 p.m.

The committee has scheduled a meeting of the candidates for Tuesday, June 29, at 7:30 p.m. at the Washakie County Fairgrounds in the 4-H “green” building. Every candidate will be allowed to have one person introduce them and speak on their behalf. Each candidate will then be able to speak for three to five minutes. There will then be time for “reasonable” questions by committee men and women.

Upon completion of the questions, voting by the committee will be done by secret ballot. Prior to the speeches, the committee will appoint two “ballot tellers” to count the ballots.

Each candidate will also have one person be able to view the counting to ensure complete transparency. Once counting is complete the top three names will be submitted to the county commissioners.

Following that meeting the commissioners will have five days to make their decision. The commissioners will be able to make their decision at their July 6 meeting due to July 5 being a federal holiday in recognition of July 4 since it occurs on a Sunday.
