Serving the Big Horn Basin for over 100 years
WORLAND – During the Washakie County School Board No. 1 Board of Trustees meeting in June, teachers from West Side Elementary gave a presentation on the activities they did at West Side during June and what the students learned during that time.
West Side learning support teacher Hanna Bayha started by discussing what they called Lemonade Wars for the students. This activity saw students make their own lemonade recipes and purchase their ingredients with limited money.
The students then went and sold lemonade at local establishments and made just over $1,300 in two hours which would later be used for a trip to Yellowstone at the end of June.
West Side teacher Vanessa Keller then talked about the different activities they did with the students, which included learning about Native American history along with activities that included staying in a teepee overnight and going to Medicine Lodge where they did activities with pictographs.
West Side teacher Shannon Brinkerhoff then discussed the week where they learned about ecosystems and fisheries. They tested the water quality of different bodies of water in the area, waters poetry, made an edible map of Wyoming and went on an adventure even catching fish along the way.
Then the students learned about different forms of wildlife and the importance of geothermal energy in Yellowstone. The students did activities involving scat and examining what kind of animal it came from.
The students then tie-dyed their own shirts before going to Yellowstone and spending the day exploring the national park.
