Serving the Big Horn Basin for over 100 years
WORLAND - Washakie County 4-H member Aubrie Carlisle completed her third year in 4-H at the Wyoming State Fair in Douglas last month and for the third straight year won a top prize with her static archery exhibit.
Carlisle said she joined 4-H because she enjoys being around kids who have the same interests as she does, but also because it has allowed her to meet new people, meeting youth of all ages and different communities.
For three years she has been involved in archery, last year she also did leathercraft and for the past two years she has also been involved in the 4-H horse show as a member of the Roadrunners 4-H Club.
Next year she is looking into adding visual arts and photography projects to her growing 4-H repertoire.
Carlisle participates in archery shooting and as static exhibits. Her first year in 4-H her flu flu arrows for hunting birds took a championship ribbon. Her leather quiver her second year won her a purple ribbon and this year's static exhibit on archery gear won her the overall grand championship in archery exhibits.
She said it took a couple of months to research and then only a couple of hours each for two to three days to put together the award-winning exhibit.
"I've been shooting for quite a few years and I've been wanting to get into more technical gear, more advanced gear," Carlisle said.
She researched the challenges of young archers including not knowing enough about the equipment, pricing and finding a balance between price and quality.
Carlisle then selected the gear she would highlight for the project, a stabilizer. She shot with and without the stabilizer and explained the difference.
In developing the exhibit, Carlisle said she enjoys art, so she incorporated that passion into the exhibit as well.
She has been involved with archery since she was 4 and at age 15, rest assured, there is still more to come from this archer, who will enter her sophomore year at Worland High School next week.
Carlisle said youth with an interest in certain areas should contact a 4-H leader about getting involved. "If you have an interest, 4-H leaders are more than willing to lend out equipment if kids don't have their own," she said noting several archery members borrow equipment for the year.
"There is a lot of opportunities in 4-H," she said.
Aubrie is the daughter of Mindy and Ben Carlisle.
