Worland High School cheer and dance team brings home third place

WORLAND – The Worland High School cheer and dance team brought home third place in the Class 3A hip hop portion of the State Spirit Competition at the Ford Wyoming Center in Casper on Jan. 28.

Worland scored 77.150 points, behind state champion Star Valley with 93.65 points and second-place Lovell with 77.98 points.

The competition showcased cheer and dance talent from all over the state, including WHS who competed in the hip hop and game day cheer categories.

The teams were coached by Nickie Lloyd and Brooklyn Hansen.

This was Lloyd's first year coaching high school cheer. Previously, she's coached Special Olympics and rec cheer. She said she decided she wanted to be a coach because she had been a cheerleader when she was younger, and when the job came open she was, "excited to be a part of that again."

According to Lloyd, the team did their own choreography, and Terry Parker of Taps Dance Studio helped put on the finishing touches.

They started rehearsing for the competition in November. Try outs for next year take place after Homecoming in the fall.

"I thought they did a great job, and we were excited to place," Lloyd said.

Lloyd mentioned that she thinks next year, they will have a better grasp going into the competition.

"I'm super proud of them and am really excited to see what next year brings us."

The team consists of captains Peyton Elliott, Brittany Deniz, Maren Cottrell, Janet Ayungyua and Abigail Westphal, and team members Emilee Harrington, Citlali Terrazas, Eleesa Cardenas, Aubrey Avant, Nicole Harrington, Samantha Keller, Elena Gunderson, Megan Abercrombie, Aubree Kruger, Anaya Saavedra, McKenna Burns, Daniela Deniz, Sydney Davis and Manager Madison Lloyd.

Other teams in the Big Horn Basin competing were Burlington, sixth in hip hop dance in Class 3A (there is no dance category in 1A/2A.)

Worland scored 65.2 points in the game-day cheer competition. State champions were Wheatland with 91.65 points. Powell scored 84.05 points and Cody, 82.2 points.
