Serving the Big Horn Basin for over 100 years

Catherine JoAnne (Matthiesen) Geary

Catherine JoAnne (Matthiesen) Geary, 78, passed away suddenly, the morning of May 9, 2022 after a wonderful Mother’s Day spent with her daughter, Tracy.

Catherine was born on August 17, 1943 in Sacramento, California to James Herbert and Clara Marie (Lockhorn) Matthiesen. She married her high school sweetheart, Samuel Otis Geary, on March 15, 1977 in Worland, Wyoming. He willingly and lovingly adopted her daughter. The family made their home in Worland. Cathy worked for Pepsi and Sam in the oil fields. The couple was in a terrible motorcycle accident where Cathy broke her neck and had many other serious injuries. She was told she may never walk again, but in her “I will do it, just because you said I couldn’t attitude,” she not only walked again but became very active in the things she enjoyed. After recovery, she went to work for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), a job she enjoyed for the next 40+ years.

Cathy enjoyed cooking and was the proud owner of numerous cookbooks. She also loved to sew and do crafts including ceramics. Gardening was another passion, whether vegetables or flowers, she loved to watch things grow. Cathy was a very dedicated and hard-working woman. After the passing of her beloved Sam, she moved into Worland Healthcare. She had always loved going to yard sales, so in order to downsize her belongings, she held a “Hall Sale” at the care center shortly after moving in. After Valentine’s Day this year, Cathy collected the helium balloons and put a large number of them in her room. It was definitely the brightest and cheeriest room in the facility until the fire marshal explained that she couldn’t keep all those balloons. That was Cathy, a beautiful soul who could touch your heart with her smile.

Cathy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sam; brothers, Daniel and James; sister, Mary L. Vat; son-in-law, Tommy Sisk. Survivors include her daughter, Tracy Godfrey of Worland; grandchildren, Brian Godfrey of Billings, Montana and Amanda (Jeremy) Brown of Florida; great-grandchildren: Trayon, Trinity, Mason and Rickey; brothers-in-law, Ernie (Ann) Geary of Worland and Rick (Nancy) Geary of Helena, Montana; and sister-in-law, Sylvia Matthiesen of Worland.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 PM, Friday, May 13th at Riverview Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Worland. Memorial donations may be made to Worland Senior Center and sent to PO Box 524, Worland, WY 82401. Online condolences may be made at http://www.bryant
