Stars and Pipes brings new demolition derby to Worland

WORLAND – This Saturday, Stars and Pipes Demolition Derby, a company promoting and organizing derbies, will be bringing a demolition derby to the Washakie County Fairgrounds this Saturday. Doors will open at 4 p.m. and the derby starts at 6 p.m.

Bradyn Harvey started the business with his brother, Bryce Harvey, in 2020 when the derbies in the area were being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Me and my brother wanted to keep it going, because if you skip a year, it’s hard to go back,” Bradyn Harvey said. “So we did the Thermopolis derby. We had about a month to plan from when the chamber cancelled to when the gate was open. We’ve been in derbies our whole lives, we figured we could pull it together and we were able to which was awesome. After that, we kind of caught the bug and wanted to keep doing it.”

Harvey said they only organized the Thermopolis derby once, letting the Thermopolis-Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce take back operations in 2021. In 2021 Stars and Pipes operated the derby in Casper.

This year the show in Worland kicks off a circuit across the state.

“One thing we noticed about derbies is that usually the same guys go to the same towns so you can always count on them showing up, and maybe a couple extra. So, we wanted to do the circuit and encourage drivers to go to different towns. So we came up with a point system that the towns can buy into the circuit. The drivers earn points and at the end of the year, whoever has the most points wins $3,000.”

The show will span over eight locations – Worland, Thermopolis, Lovell, two shows in Powell, Wheatland, Rawlins and Casper.

According to Harvey, drivers get a point for preregistering, another point for passing inspection, three points for first place, two points for second place and one point for third. The most aggressive driver will be given three points.

Tickets for the Worland derby are available at Eventbright.com and will also be sold at the gate.

Harvey added that there will be food vendors at the derby, including the Wing It food truck, street tacos, Arctic Blast shaved ice and Hangry Dog. The Worland Elks will be in charge of the beer garden.
