Serving the Big Horn Basin for over 100 years
TEN SLEEP — In Superintendent Jimmy Phelps’ final meeting, the Ten Sleep school board handled a number of personnel issues in a meeting that finished under one hour.
Phelps is retiring at the end of the month. At the close of Monday’s board meeting he said, “I would like to thank the board for this job for the last seven years. It’s been a wonderful experience for both myself and Gloria. I wish you all the best in the future.”
Board members Bill Murphy, Shana Harstad and Erin Blutt (appearing via telephone) thanked Phelps for his service to the district.
SALARY SCHEDULES
The board approved eight separate salary schedules based on changes approved last month by the board.
Business Manager Connie Gay presented the salary schedules for approval. All schedules were approved as presented. The principal’s salary schedule based on a 205-day contract includes a $1,500 increase to the base to $75,385. Steps and lanes add an additional $820.
The schedule for administrators — business manager and technology director — is a $1,500 increase to the base for a starting base of $62,578. Steps and lanes each increase $1,040.
Supervisor salary schedule has the $1,500 base increase with a base start of $44,720 for the transportation director and $32,760 for the maintenance director. Steps increase by $1,040.
The certified teacher/counselor schedule includes the $1,500 increase to the base with a start at $43,000. Increases for steps and lanes are at $740.
Gay also asked the board to approve an additional $5,000 annually for teachers who teaches a multi-grade class.
The classified/hourly salary schedule includes a $1 per hour increase to the base except for custodians with a 75 cent per hour increase to the base. Steps are 50 cents per hour.
Base salaries range from $13 per hour for cooks, $13.25 per hour for custodians, $14.50 for paraeducators, $17 for food service supervisor, $18 for bus drivers, $19.25 for business office assistant, $23.25 for administrative assistant and $32.75 per hour for the school nurse.
The board approved increases for substitutes within the district as well. Substitute teachers and paraprofessionals will be paid $110 per day.
Gay said extra duty salary schedules changed with the increase in the base for the other salaries as the extra duty assignments are based on a percentage of the base. Percentages change based on the number of participants required.
The board did meet in a closed executive session prior to approving some personnel changes.
In other personnel action, the board:
•Approved the resignations of social studies teacher and head middle school football coach Dane Weaver and paraeducator Megan Stiffney.
•Approved the hiring of Emma Reid as the social studies teacher.
•Approved five coaching and extra duty assignments — Dan Cheatham as head high school boys football coach, Chasity Dykstra as assistant middle school track coach, Chad Fox as head high school boys basketball coach, Corey Rice as assistant high school boys football coach pending certification and Wade Moore as ski club sponsor.
In other business at Monday’s meeting the board:
•Approved a motion to disperse or dispose of items in the old Masonic Lodge storage building in order for renovations to begin into a board meeting room and office space.
Phelps said there are items that could be sold and some that are “worthless” that the district is happy to give away if they haul it away.
He said a few items would be sold via a bid process.
•Moved their July meeting to July 18, which will include the annual budget hearing. Gay said she was requesting the move to allow more time to finalize budget figures and to allow time for publication in the Northern Wyoming News.
There will be a work session on June 30 to discuss job descriptions for superintendent and principal and to discuss a proposed policy change on honor roll. The policy was slated to be on the agenda Monday night but Blutt requested it be withdrawn and placed on the agenda for the work session.
No action is taken at a work session.
