Serving the Big Horn Basin for over 100 years

Ned Boyce Smotherman

Ned Boyce "Smut" Smotherman, 81, of Mills, Wyoming, passed away at his residence on January 22, 2023.

Ned was born in Thermopolis, Wyoming to Gladys Urwin and Gerald Smothermon on April 26, 1941. He spent his adolescent years in Thermopolis but moved to Worland, Wyoming during his teenage years, graduating from Worland High School in 1959. Following graduation Ned joined the US Army and was proud to serve his country from 1961 to 1964. During this time, he was deployed to Korea, where he worked as a mechanic.

Returning home, Ned worked a variety of odd jobs, including transporting cattle and tending bar. Eventually Ned settled into driving truck for his career. He worked for companies such as Waggoners and Admiral Beverage. He owned his own trucking transportation company for many years. He tried retirement in his 60's but couldn't stand to be idle. He then went to work for the Bayou Bar in Mills until his formal retirement at age 70.

Ned, or "Smut", as many of his friends knew him, was very active in his social community. He was a member of the VFW, The American Legion, and the Eagles. He participated in local fantasy football leagues and was known to play darts for pleasure and in tournaments. True to his Wyoming roots, Ned loved everything western. When not found socializing with his community, he could be found at home reading novels by C.J. Box and other notable authors, or simply enjoying watching and re-watching every western movie and TV show ever created.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Smothermon, mother, Gladys Dunn, stepfather, Kenneth Dunn, and brother, Terry Smothermon. Survivors include his sons: Greg Smotherman of Germany; Troy Smotherman of Clearwater, Florida; Sean Smotherman of Bonnie Lake, Washington; Edward Smotherman of Worland and daughter, Lori Power of Seattle, Washington; brothers: Jerry Smothermon of Denver, Colorado and Tony Smothermon of Worland; 3 grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
