Serving the Big Horn Basin for over 100 years

Danny "Dan" Thomas August

Danny "Dan" Thomas August, 71, passed away unexpectedly at the Billings Clinic on May 14, 2023.

"Big Dan" was born in Walsenburg, Colorado on November 2, 1952 to John William and Agnes June (Forbidussi) August.

Growing up, Dan's family moved around to ten different towns until he was 14 years old when they settled in Worland, Wyoming. He enjoyed playing football for the Worland Warriors and fondly remembered the time when he made an interception and ran back for a touchdown. Dan joined the US Navy shortly out of high school in 1972. Because of his service, Dan earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Meritorious Unit Commendation. He finished his service with an honorable discharge and came home to marry the love of his life, Lory Black. To this union brought three children, Danny II, JohnRay and Shealynn.

Throughout the years, Dan had a love for cars and trucks. He enjoyed working with his hands and bringing life back to something broken. He was always a hard worker and someone everyone could depend on. He spent his career working for Marathon Oil working as a roustabout. Shortly after retirement, he decided he still needed something to keep him busy, so he started working for Halliburton. A few years later, he settled in working at the Recycle/Landfill plant and spent the next 15 years there until retiring for good.

In Dan's free time you could find him fishing, camping, working in the yard to make sure Lory's flowers were perfect, working on wood projects, bowling or watching his beloved Denver Broncos. He and Lory spent 2 years helping operate Season's Supper Club. He also was a member of the Eagle's for over 37 years, holding many positions. His favorite pastime however was spending time with his grandchildren. They were the focal point in his life. Dan was a gentle soul who was dedicated, motivated and loved his family fiercely.

Dan and Lory's marriage was a fairy tale of everlasting love, and Dan couldn't bear to be away from Lory for long. As Mother's Day came to an end, he left this world to be by his wife's side for all of eternity.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife, Lory August and brother-in-law, James Thompson.

He is survived by his children, Danny August of Sheridan, Wyoming, JohnRay August of Sheridan and Shealynn August of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; brothers, Ronald (Deanna) August of Ellendale, North Dakota and Scott (Ruthann) August of Billings, Montana; sister, Sandra (the late Jim) Thompson of Worland; sister-in-law, Tobie (J.L.) Guthrie of Worland; and brother-in-law, Ray Paul (MaryBeth) Black of Worland and grandchildren: Bryce, Landon, Brooklynn and AnnaLee; numerous nieces, and grand-dogs: Italy, Rella, Willow and Mason.
