Serving the Big Horn Basin for over 100 years
American Legion Auxiliary, a leading organization dedicated to fostering leadership and civic engagement among young women, announced the successful conclusion of its highly anticipated Girls State session.
The transformative event took place from June 4 to June 10 at Laramie County Community College, Cheyenne, bringing together talented and ambitious young women from across Wyoming for an unforgettable experience.
Girls State is an immersive program designed to educate and empower future female leaders. Throughout the session, participants engaged in interactive workshops, learned about government and public service, networked with influential leaders, and formed lifelong friendships with like-minded peers.
During the week, each delegate ran for an office and participated in the voting process.
Washakie County delegates sponsored by the Worland American Legion Auxiliary Unit 44, were Elena Gunderson, Worland, elected Judge of the Circuit Court; Samantha Keller, Worland, elected as Court Reporter; and Jadeyn Opstad, Ten Sleep, elected Federalist Party Social Services Committee Chairman, Senate Corporations Committee Chairman and Justice of the Supreme Court.
Two delegates are chosen from each local Girls State program to attend Girls Nation. While at Girls Nation, the delegates get to interact with young women from all over the country and participate in an immersive government experience on a national level in Washington D.C.. After being voted in by their peers, 6 delegates faced an interview panel where only two were selected to attend. Emma Johnson of Powell and Emma Peheringer of Buffalo will be attending Girls Nation in the coming weeks.
During the Girls State session, participants accomplished remarkable achievements:
Engaging Workshops: The young women participated in interactive workshops led by experienced professionals. They explored topics such as public speaking, effective communication, negotiation skills, and strategic decision-making. These workshops equipped them with the necessary tools to become confident and effective leaders in their respective communities.
Understanding Government and Public Service: Participants gained a deep understanding of the democratic process by creating their own mock state government. They learned about legislative processes, participated in policy debates, and developed insights into public service careers. These experiences allowed them to envision themselves as active contributors to their communities' betterment.
Inspirational Connections: Girls State provided a platform for young women to connect with accomplished leaders and mentors from various fields. Through panel discussions, networking events, and mentorship opportunities, participants received valuable insights, guidance, and established meaningful connections that will continue to inspire and support them in their future endeavors.
Lasting Friendships: The Girls State session fostered an environment of camaraderie and collaboration, resulting in the formation of lifelong friendships. Participants shared their passions for leadership and community engagement, creating a network of like-minded individuals who will continue to motivate and uplift each other in their journeys.
