Roady and Farrell compete at NHSFR

Worland High School senior and Chief Washakie FFA member Sydnee Roady competed in her third National High School Finals Rodeo last week in Gillette.

Roady competed in the reined cow horse competition. On her first ride on Monday, July 17, Roady placed fourth with a score of 282. On her second performance on Friday, July 21, she finished eighth with a 276.

There are two parts to the reined cow horse, the rein work and the cow work. The rein work, according to FFA Advisor Grace Godfrey, is the portion of the contest that does not involve a cow. Sometimes described as the equestrian equivalent of figure skating, horse and rider perform a pattern with specific maneuvers: loping fast and slow circles, performing flying lead changes, spinning in each direction, sliding stops and backing up.

The cow work, also called fence work, is the final stage. After the horse and rider have finished the rein work, a single cow is pushed through the gate at the opposite end of the arena. The horse must first "box" the cow, or hold it at the end of the arena, maintaining control and staying in proper position. Next, the rider allows the cow to run down the long side of the arena. The horse and rider must turn the cow at least one time in direction of the fence before taking the cow into the middle of the arena and driving it in a circle each way. The most controlled cow work, with the highest degree of difficulty and the best form, score the highest. Scores from the reined portion and the cow work portion are combined together for a final score.

As a team, Wyoming finished in 11th place in the girls standings with 1,855 points. Texas won the girls team competition with 4,680 points.

In the boys division, Wyoming was third with 3,565 points, behind Texas with 7,825 and Utah, 5,545.

Roedy Farrell of Thermopolis also competed in the NHSFR in bareback riding, placing second in his first go round on Monday, July 17, with a 65; capturing first in Friday, July 21 performance with a 70 and fourth on Saturday, July 22 with a 77.
