New events added for Ten Sleep homecoming for students, community

Homecoming week in Ten Sleep, which started Monday and continues through Saturday, is packed with various activities for students and community members.

The student council is especially excited about several events on Friday and Saturday, according to teacher and student council co-sponsor Don Anderson.

Friday begins the biggest day with community events starting with the pep assembly that will take place at 9 a.m., which will have the whole school in attendance and is open to the community. Here, attendees will see homecoming royalty crowned. The newly crowned king and queen will then be featured at the next homecoming event, which is the parade. Starting at 10 a.m. on Main Street, the parade will feature floats made by the classes, following their class themes, and floats made by organizations and community members as another way for more people to get involved.

A new event to Ten Sleep homecoming this year is the addition of an elementary student talent show, which gives younger students an opportunity to be involved in homecoming. This year will be the first time they have had this show, thanks to the support of the new music teacher Grace Kienzle. It will take place Friday starting at noon and will be open to the public.

Later on in the day, the highly anticipated tailgate will start at 6 p.m. This will be at the school's new football field at the corner of Fourth Street and Willow Street in the northeastern side of town.

Student body president Jacob Holiday said that this night is what he is most looking forward to. In hopes of summoning the community to the field by cheering and honking, there will be a car rally cruising around town that evening.

At this tailgate, the student council will be providing burgers and other food for the community. This will also be the second year that they hold a "Car Bash," which is when students will demolish a car that they receive from Pete Smet Recycling in Worland and which will be decorated beforehand by art students. Finally, there will be the "Burning of the Classes" after sunset once it is dark enough.

On Saturday, to wrap up homecoming week, the middle school football game will start at noon, and the high school football game will be at 2 p.m. Both teams will be playing the Hulett Red Devils. Homecoming royalty will also be recognized during half time at the high school game. High school volleyball will be playing the Arvada-Clearmont Panthers at 5 p.m. This will be their first game of the season.

Throughout the week, students have been able to participate in dress-up days. The themes for these dress up days are chosen by the student council, which is led by Jacob Holiday this year. To start off the week, Monday was pajama day. Tuesday was redneck and/or anything but a backpack day. Students had the chance to ditch their backpacks at home for the day and be creative with what they bring with them in replace of their regular packs. For Wednesday, the theme was twin day.

Along with Throwback Thursday, the theme for the next day, activities will continue into the evening with a middle school volleyball game starting at 4:30 p.m., which, as always, is open to the public. The final dress-up theme for Friday is school spirit and/or class theme. Class themes are an additional element to homecoming week, as each grade has its own theme to follow. These themes are Pioneer Prison (middle school), Casino (ninth grade), Sophomore Universe (10th grade), Fifties (11th grade), and Western (12th grade).

Aside from dressing up with these themes on Friday, students will also be decorating the school hallways, according to their respective themes. Decked out school hallways have been a key part of homecoming traditions at the school and help to keep up the festive spirit throughout the week. At the end of each school day through the week, the school will participate in class-led activities as another way to celebrate.

To conclude the week, the homecoming dance for grades 9-12 will be from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Saturday in the school cafeteria.

Students and staff are looking forward to seeing their hard work come together and result in a fun-filled homecoming week for the school and community.
