Classification changes for Worland and Thermopolis athletics; Worland moves to 2A in football

The latest reclassification cycle by the Wyoming High School Activities Association brings changes for Worland High School and Hot Springs County High athletics.

With new reclassification rules in place, WHSAA, the governing body for Wyoming high school activities, approved the reclassification for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years.

In the spring, WHSAA changed how each two-year classification cycle is handled. Hard enrollment cutoffs now determine a school’s classification. Those cutoffs are: 4A= 700 or more students; 3A= 699-210 students; 2A= 209-110 students; 1A= 109 and fewer students.

The hard cutoff applies to all sports except football.

Football in Wyoming will still be classified as, going by school ADMs (Average Daily Membership), the top 10 schools are 4A, the following 12 schools are 3A, the next 14 schools are 2A, followed by the next 14 1A nine-man, and the remaining schools are 1A six-man.

Worland will remain 3A in all sports except football in this reclass cycle. Worland’s ADM was 343 for this cycle, the 24th largest school in Wyoming. The 11th and 12th 3A schools, Torrington (356) and Buffalo (352), are the state’s 21st and 22nd largest schools. Worland is the second largest school in 2A football, and Pinedale is the largest 2A football school at 349.

For football, Worland will be placed in the 2A West conference along with Cokeville, Kemmerer, Lovell, Lyman, Mountain View, Pinedale and Thermopolis.

In the 2A East football conference are Big Horn, Burns, Glenrock, Moorcroft, Newcastle, Tongue River, Upton-Sundance and Wheatland.

Thermopolis has been 2A in football, wrestling and cross-country. With the new reclass rule, the remaining Thermopolis sports are now 2A.

Cody High School is also moving to 3A in all sports, and Greybull is going to 1A nine-man football.

Schools are allowed to opt up or opt down for a reclass cycle. Schools that opt down are not allowed to participate in postseason events, while schools that opt up are still postseason eligible.

Two schools chose to opt-up in this reclass cycle, Cokeville going from 1A six-man to 2A and Guernsey 1A six-man to 1A nine-man.
