Serving the Big Horn Basin for over 100 years
The Bighorn Basin Outdoor Recreation Collaborative (BBORC) convened its monthly meeting on Thursday, June 13 at the Ten Sleep Library.
The featured speaker was Jared Koenig, Recreation Program Manager for the Sheridan Community Land Trust. Koenig is also a member of the newly formed Cloud Peak Outdoor Recreation Collaborative (CPORC).
According to the June 21 edition of Wyoming Outdoor Recreation’s Collaborative Connection newsletter, Koenig discussed the process of creating and expanding Sheridan’s Tongue River Water Trail, a paddle and float trail for kayaks and other non-motorized recreational watercraft. As they continue their work on a similar but much larger project, the Bighorn Blueway Water Trail, which will run from Wedding of the Waters near Thermopolis all the way to Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area near Lovell, BBORC members were keen to hear Koenig’s insights about the Sheridan project’s challenges and successes.
In other news from the meeting, the BBORC will collaborate this summer with the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management and Wyoming Game and Fish in organizing a community float trip on a portion of the future Bighorn Blueway Water Trail. On Saturday, August 10, members of the public are invited to bring kayaks, canoes, rafts, inner tubes, surfboards and other such craft to the Basin boat ramp, and float down the Big Horn River to the bridge at Greybull. Interested persons are encouraged to keep an eye on the BBORC’s Facebook page (facebook.com/WYBBORC) for updates and details, or they may send an email to Amy Crawford at Wyoming Outdoor Recreation ([email protected]).
According to Wyoming Outdoor Recreation’s website, the BBORC is one of eight outdoor recreation collaboratives convened by the agency throughout the state.
These collaboratives bring together local community members, stakeholders, federal agencies, and state agencies to support sustainable outdoor recreation growth.
