Social media, online dangers focus of free presentation

Continuing their presentations on a safe community, the Worland Seventh-day Adventist Church is hosting a public presentation regarding social media safety and online safety for children and seniors.

Author and speaker John DiGirolamo will present “Inside the Mind of a Predator” at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 1 at the Worland Community Center . The presentation is free and open to everyone.

DiGirolamo will discuss how predators operate and what every parent needs to know including covering topics such as:

Is social media safe?

A police officer created an online profile of a 13-year-old. Every parent needs to know what happened next.

How predators target teens online.

Tips for parents and ways to protect your child.

How teens circumvent parental controls.

How predators target senior citizens.

Organizer Karen Fettig, a longtime champion of bringing awareness to human trafficking in Wyoming said, “This topic is important more now than ever. Children are exploited online. They are dying by suicide within hours of being blackmailed because they sent a sexual type picture. The people exploiting them were mostly from foreign countries.”

Fettig has been working on human trafficking awareness for 24 years, more focused the last five including presentations at State Fair in 2022 and 2023.

Fettig said, “Exploitation of children is escalating. The increasing presence of cartel in the USA makes it more dangerous for children. Cartel don’t play by rules; they are ruthless. They kidnap children for sex, drug mules and organ harvesting.”

Regarding speaker DiGirolamo, Fettig said he has researched human trafficking and brings good points up that parents need to know right now.

“Kids on phones with data are exposed to predators without knowing it until it is too late. There are many layers to human trafficking. I feel the urge to try to save children from harm. The information in this presentation is crucial for every parent, teacher, [and others who work with children] because it is a reality that is not going away. It is a rapidly increasing humanitarian crisis of epic proportions,” she said.

DiGirolamo has authored several books and booklets, including one 42-page booklet, “It’s Not About the Predator: A Parent’s Guide to Internet and Social Media Safety.”

Other books are “It’s Not About the Badge: Real Cops. Real Stories. Join Their Journey,” “It’s Not About the Sex: True Stories of Human Trafficking From a Law Enforcement Officer, A Survivor, A Brothel Madam And An Advocate,” and his newest book, “It’s Not About the Devil: True Stories of Fighting Evil in the Modern World.”
