The News Editorial: Still plenty to see and do at the fair

Fair week wraps up in the next few days. Hopefully you have ventured out to the Washakie County Fairgrounds to check out the hard work from the youth and from many adults in the community who have entered projects in open class.

What you have missed is the horse show, cornhole tournament, the 4-H judging but you can still check out all the projects on display; you missed the swine show, dog show and public style revue where 4-H members modeled their sewing projects; you missed the goat and sheep show, open class exhibit judging, the cat show (always a fun event except maybe for the cats) and Big Praise in concert.

What you do not have to miss coming Thursday, Friday and Saturday is the rabbit and poultry show, beef show, kids rodeo and Tris Munsick in concert. The concert is free thanks to the Washakie County Fair Board. Bring your chair and enjoy some fine music from this Sheridan band; all of that is just on Thursday.

Friday is the bred and fed shows, featuring animals that are bred and fed in Washakie County. The round robins, both 4-H and FFA, highlight the top showman for each animal show from the entire week of fair.

The fair rodeo, part of the Big Horn Basin Rodeo Circuit gets started at 7 p.m. and Jared Rogerson returns to the fair with a free concert to round out the evening.

Saturday be sure to come out for the parade, we are loaded up with candy for our entry, along with tossing out some free newspapers. The Junior Livestock Sale can be entertaining to watch when the bidding gets fast and furious, even if you are unable to purchase an animal.

For those with a passion for baking and looking for rhubarb recipes the annual Rhubarb Rhevival is the place to be. Some of these bakers are very entertaining in their presentation, so come watch and get to sample the delicious submissions.

For those who love dogs, Strut Your Mutt is the place to be to watch these dogs compete for fun categories and fun prizes.

Throughout the week you can enjoy a train ride (nominal fee) or get a free balloon animal or have your face painted for free. There are free large yard games to play as well and plenty of food to enjoy for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Saturday night, of course, wraps things up with this year’s headliner grammy-nominated Thompson Square, who boasts two No. 1 country hits. Worland’s own Rattlesnake Ridge opens for the band.

As with the other concerts, bring your lawn chair and enjoy. Tickets are available online.

Most of all fair is a time for fun, socializing and developing the feeling of community.

We have been and will be covering the majority of fair this week and you can check out some early photos in this week’s issue, as well as more photos over the next two weeks.

And, don’t forget to participate in the trivia contest. If you are an avid reader of the Northern Wyoming News the answers will be easy as all questions were derived from stories we have done over the past few weeks.

There are some great prizes available and we would like to thank all of our prize sponsors — Sally’s Classic Pizza, Kienlen Ace Hardware, Hasco Industrial Supply, Bee Healthy, Larsen’s Bicycles and Sugarbeet Boutique & Art.

Hope to see you at the fair.
