Making STRIDES changes schedule for weather

On National Mammography Day, this Friday, Oct. 18, another Making STRIDES against breast cancer will be offered to Washakie County and neighboring communities with an event in Pioneer Square in Worland.

Organizer Cheri Bundren said it is an “invitation for everyone to participate in an effort to raise funds for research and patient services as we continue the fight to end breast cancer.”

The event was scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., but with inclement weather in the forecast they are pushing the start time to 1:30 p.m. and ending about 6 p.m. Pam Aagard will be the opening speaker at 1:30 p.m. Bundren said Aagard is a two-time breast cancer survivor. Becky Cook, who is currently in treatment for two cancers, will speak at 3:30 p.m. if “weather is not too extreme.”

The National Weather Service is forecasting showers mainly before noon with a high near 47 and a wind of 11 to 17 mph.

There is a minimum suggested donation per walker and a QR code will be offered with checks and cash accepted.

Mile walkers are encouraged to go downtown and two-mile walkers uptown to Blair’s and Kienlen Ace Hardware.

Upon returning to registration, all walkers with completed tasks (selfies or passports) will be eligible for door prizes donated by area businesses to be drawn about 5:30 p.m. to close the event.

BRA DAY

Bundren said BRA Day (Breast Reconstruction Awareness) is Oct. 16, so as an add-on this year there is an opportunity to show support “with a colorful, attractive and positively in good taste tata [bra].”

She said these will be displayed in Pioneer Square on a row of trees behind the woman statue during STRIDES hours, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 18.

The tata (bra) can be in honor/memory of a special person (even yourself) who has had or is currently fighting breast cancer. Personalize it, having utmost respect for the person being celebrated. The committee is also accepting up to 2 feet in height pink ribbons for the TaTa Trees.

Bundren said to recognize that men can also have breast cancer there will also be at least one muscle shirt/tank undershirt included in the display.
