Serving the Big Horn Basin for over 100 years
The Washakie County Fair Board, without an entertainment contractor, will be attending the Rocky Mountain Association of Fairs next month in Rapid City, South Dakota, in hopes of securing entertainment for the 2025 county fair.
The board set the 2025 fair week dates as July 19 to 26 with the horse show starting things on Saturday, July 19 and the livestock sale finishing the week on July 26.
Beth Shaffer, acting as chair at Monday night’s meeting, reminded the board that Daniel Kosel, who has been the musical entertainment contractor was no longer interested in assisting Washakie County Fair.
Shaffer said she is willing to handle the duties but noted, “I do not want to go backward,” regarding scheduling a headlining concert.
Board member Sherry Walter said she would like to see the Monster Trucks return and the board agreed.
They agreed to set an entertainment budget at the November meeting prior to the RMAF.
OTHER BUSINESS
In other business at Monday’s meeting, the board:
•Discussed tracking the food vouchers to determine who was using them at the next fair.
•Agreed to purchase a printer from Serlkay for no more than $600.
•Approved the adopt-a-bench program accepting a bid to make the benches from Warrior Welding Shop at Worland High School. The benches will be sold for $450 and will replace the old benches at the show arena along the wall adjacent to the pig barn. People can adopt a bench in memory or honor of someone and a plaque will be added to the bench.
A portion of sales will go back to the Warrior Welding Shop for their traveling expenses.
•Heard from style revue superintendent Vicky Gopp. She said she and her fellow volunteers are willing to do the style revue and were pleasantly surprised with the crowd that attended the 2024 style revue. She said they need another venue, however, due to the crowd.
•Discussed hiring contract labor for more hours than just prior to, during and after fair week. Board member Dani Rice said she would look into legalities of contract labor and figure out a potential schedule.
2024 fair employee Beth Bates has expressed interest in the position.
•Shaffer said she would reach out to Chief Washakie FFA Advisor Grace Godfrey, who was looking for some FFA projects, to see if they were interested in building some new display cases for indoor exhibits.
•Discussed joining with Park and Big Horn County for a combined dog show. The county was approached a few years ago but the dog club opted out of the combined show. There were only two dogs in the 2024 Washakie County Fair Dog Show.
The next meeting will be Tuesday, Nov. 11, 7 p.m.
