Karla's Kolumn: Random thoughts and questions on sports and politics

One of my all time favorite memes is the one that states, “My brain has too many tabs open; 4 of them are frozen and I have no idea where the music is coming from.”

For this week’s column I am going to try and go through some of those tabs open in my brain and jot down some random thoughts so I can close them and open some more.

1. Who said NASCAR’s Championship Chase was boring? Last Sunday’s race as Kyle Larson dominated the final stage, the drama unfolding was who was going to advance to the playoffs and the Round of Eight. That question changed numerous times throughout the race as I watched my favorite driver, Chase Elliott go from being borderline in, to being out and thanks to some pit crew strategies, clinching the playoffs halfway through the final stage. Whew.

The overall Round of Eight changed again after the race when Alex Bowman, sadly another favorite driver (yes I root for Hendrick Motorsports) was disqualified when his car did not pass post inspection when his car did not make weight (yes it is a thing in motor racing).

2. Watching the Mets in the National League Championship Series with my huge Mets fan, husband Alan, has been entertaining. They lost Game One and he got frustrated, turned off the TV and went to a work on a project in his workshop. This was reminiscent of my father who would get mad at the University of Wyoming Cowboys and go tinker in this garage, or out to my uncle’s to reorganize his shop. Boy would there be a lot of organizing and tinkering this year.

Then Monday I get a random text from Alan. “Grand slam. Grand slam!!!, 6-0” with three starry smiley faces. It was at this time that I knew the Mets and Dodgers were playing Game Two Monday afternoon. The series is tied as of this writing. I would like to tell him I told him so but I refrained. (After Game One, I told him, it’s one of seven, they can still come back and win the series.) Will they? It is anyone’s guess. Maybe it’s the Miracle Mets Part Duex.

3. Off of sports and on to politics. Both major parties are touting their opponent will threaten democracy? I guess it is up to the voters on Nov. 5 to make that determination on who they believe really threatens democracy and this country. It’s your right to vote. Please exercise it.

4. Why is the Select Committee on Legislative Facilities, Technology and Process voting to limit access to the State House and Senate Chambers. Through recommended changes to the Management Council policy they propose to remove access to both chambers while they are in session and access for photos or filming is limited to the galleries. Why.

The Wyoming Press Association issued this statement Tuesday, which I whole-heartedly support, “The Wyoming Press Association finds it disturbing that the Selected Committee on Legislative Facilities, Technology and Process would even consider revoking access of the legislative chambers to credentialed journalists.

“The Wyoming Legislature is, and always has been, the People’s House and our elected representatives are there to do the work of the people. Additionally, it has been the role of the fourth estate to report on the work being done for the people of Wyoming by their legislators. To limit or revoke access sets a dangerous precedent not only for the Wyoming Legislature itself, but for local government agencies to follow suit.

“Newspapers in print and online still serve as the best avenue for constituents to learn how their legislators are representing them in Cheyenne. Restricting access for members of the media will only serve to increase the divide between the elected and their electors.”

5. I do not think anyone in Wyoming is upset at the change in the forecast for showers and possible snow in the mountains as we all know that it is desperately needed for the Elk Fire in the Bighorn National Forest and the Pack Trail Fire in the Bridger-Teton National Forest. May Mother Nature bring plenty of moisture to help our firefighters.

With a few tabs closed there is room to open more, wonder what they will be and I still wonder where the music is coming from, perhaps from my favorite podcast Monsters Among Us?
