Serving the Big Horn Basin for over 100 years

Mary Elizabeth Dorr

Mary Elizabeth Dorr, 93, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2024, surrounded by her loving children at the Worland Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. Born on August 19, 1931, in Grass Creek, Wyoming, to Emil John and Jennie (Crosswaite) Sayles, Mary lived a life rich in love, service, and community.

Mary spent most of her life in the Big Horn Basin, where her roots as a ranch kid instilled in her a strong work ethic and a deep connection to the land. As the eldest of seven siblings, she embraced the role of a second mother, nurturing her younger siblings with unwavering care and support.

Mary left school early to contribute to her family's needs, starting her working life at Ben Franklin. It was there she met the love of her life, Raymond Jacob Dorr, who entered the store one day to purchase a lunch box. Despite Raymond's deployment to the military, their bond flourished, and upon his return, she courageously ended her current relationship to reunite with her true love. They married on August 6, 1950, in Hardin, Montana, and soon moved to New Jersey as Raymond was called to serve in the Korean War. During his service, Mary worked diligently at a Neon Sign Factory soldering, showcasing her strength and resilience.

After Ray's discharge from the Army, the couple returned to Wyoming, where Mary honed her culinary skills at Merz Bakery and worked various jobs, including driving beet trucks during harvest. A gifted seamstress, she became well-known for her beautiful Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls and was often sought after to alter wedding dresses and sew clothes for family and friends. Most of all, Mary loved being a wife and mother to her family.

Mary had a heart that embraced everyone; she was a mother to the neighborhood kids, always ready to cut their hair and offer a listening ear. Her home was a sanctuary for all, embodying an open-door policy that welcomed anyone in need. Known for her selflessness and radiant smile, she truly was the closest thing to an angel in her community.

A pillar of Grace Chapel Community Church, Mary played an instrumental role in its growth, dedicating her time and energy to serve others. Her love of social gatherings found expression in her active participation in the garden club, as well as in countless games of Bridge, Pinochle and joyous celebrations with friends and family.

Mary leaves behind a legacy of kindness, love, and unwavering support. She is survived by her devoted children, who cherish the lessons she taught them and the warmth she brought into their lives. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond, brothers, Emil J Sayles, Bill Sayles and sister Etta May Hojio.

She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer (Moses) Martinez of Worland, Wyoming; sons, Greg (Lori) Dorr of Jamestown, North Dakota, Jeff Dorr of Worland and Brian (Krista) Dorr of Gaylord, Michigan; sisters, Margaret Ann Hojio of Greeley, Colorado, Kathy (Dave) Vigil of Worland and Bonnie Miller of Basin; grandchildren: Christine, Jacob, Greg Jr., Morgan (Mary), Seth (Claire), Becky (Joe) Martinez, Brittany (A.J.)
